GARRISON, WENDELL PHILLIPS

The New Gulliver.

Jamaica, Queensborough, New York: The Marion Press, 1898. First edition, trade issue, one of 300 copies; there was also an issue of 120 copies, bound in full horse hide. Wright III, 2130; Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, vol. 1, page 89. 8vo, tan calf spine, blue boards, leather label, gilt lettering. Vignette title. ¶ A short sequel to Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels by the son of William Lloyd Garrison, the editor of The Nation, 1865-1906, and bibliophile. Obviously named for his father’s friend and fellow crusader, Wendell Phillips Garrison would not have disappointed his namesake. He was an ardent reformer and champion of the underprivileged. He also dedicated a great deal of his time to the support of libraries, and in 1902 wrote a work on Holbein and Bewick. Slightly worn and a little foxed; fine copy.
