Poor Jack: A Play in One Act.
Richmond: Privately Printed, 1906 [for 1927]. First edition, a forgery. 8vo, original printed tan wrappers, 30 pages. ¶ Poor Jack, a play allegedly by Cabell based on his story “Love-letters of Falstaff” and privately printed in Richmond in 1906 (and hence one of his earliest works) began circulating in the book trade (a la T. J. Wise) in 1927. It was an attempt by some forgers (who signed the preface “J. B. C.”) to take advantage of the current Cabell craze. They failed, however, in their research: the story on which the play is based did not appear until 1921, 15 years after the spurious date of Poor Jack. Edges slightly worn; fine copy.
