Buchbeschreibung
Bacon, Francis.
Sylva Sylvarum: or A Naturall History. In Ten Centuries.
London: J.H. for William Lee, 1627. Small folio, engraved portrait, engraved title, (Sylva 7), 266, (9, index); (New Atlantis, 4), 47, (2) pp. Old calf rebacked, portrait repaired in outer margin not touching image, first 2 leaves lightly soiled, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, second issue with the letterpress title dated 1627. An interesting association copy signed by Thomas Henshaw; this is probably the 17th writer on the occult but it might also be the Thomas Henshaw born in Stratford-on-Avon in 1589 who emigrated to Surrey County in Virginia by 1638. “Bacon’s miscellaneous collection of observations and experiments in natural history was published by Dr. Rawley in 1627, the year after Bacon’s death, but the preface was written by Rawley during his lifetime and the first issue has a letterpress title dated 1626 (the engraved title is 1627 in both issues). It was repeatedly reissued, reaching a tenth edition in 1676. Appended to the ’sylva Sylvarum’ in Rawley’s edition is the 'New Atlantis.’ This... was written before 1617. It is deservedly one of the most popular of Bacon’s works; it bears the stamp of his genius as much, perhaps, as anything which he wrote; and, lastly, it is credited with having, to a large extent, suggested the foundation and programme of our own Royal Society, as well as of several scientific associations abroad” (DNB). STC 1169. Gibson 171.
