Madrid, 1799. Delteil 40i, Harris 38i/xii. Etching with burnished aquatint. Plate 3 of Los Caprichos, First state, 1st edition, Before the plate was bevelled and steel faced, This the 1799 first edition is identified by the brilliance of the impression and the paper and ink used. 215 x 150mm, 8 7/16 x 5 7/8. Goya's infamous Los Caprichos set of 80 aquatints and etchings was issued in working proofs, trial proofs, and 12 states. The plates are in the possession of the Calcografia and the sets have been re - issued by them from the second edition on over the over the last 200 years ending with the 12th edition in 1937. All the plates were bevelled and steel faced in 1878 from the 4th-12th edition. Early impressions are on rather thick handmade paper. In fine condition with full margins.

Post charges range from $15 up depending on the weight, size, insured value, method of shipping and distance.

I have been a member of ABAA and ILAB-LILA since 1979 dba L'Estampe Originale. I have been dealing in rare European and American antiquarian books and works of art on paper from the sixteenth to the twentieth century for thirty years.
