He graduated from Princeton and was admitted to the bar, where he built a reputation as a criminal lawyer. He was a Virginia state legislator, an active member of the Whig party, deputy U.S. attorney for the western district of Virginia, and an opponent of nullification & secession. First American edition. 8vo.; (10), folding chart, 108pp., plus 236pp. appendix of cases & digest of decisions of the American courts on the law of lien, (4pp. index). Full leather (a bit dry); gilt stamped red morocco spine label. Front board somewhat bowed, else a very good copy.
