It was a crime of passion, Baker having believed that Bates was having an affair with his wife. He was initially released as insane, but was re- arrested, convicted and hanged, after pressure from the Bates family. Lower outer corner of page 21 lacking, resulting in the loss of a word or two. Scattered foxing; blank rear endpaper lacking. Faint old library stamp on front board.
