Prentice & Weissinger, Printers, Louisville, KY: 1846. Dr. Baker shot Bates in the back, on the street in Cumberland, Kentucky. It was a crime of passion, Baker having believed that Bates was having an affair with his wife. He was initially released as insane, but was re- arrested, convicted and hanged, after pressure from the Bates family. COLEMAN 1664 McDADE 60 First edition. 8vo.; xiii, errata, 152pp. Frontis. diagram present [portrait lacking]. Trial & evidence by A.R. M'Kee. Contemporary leather spine & marbled boards. Gilt lettering & rules on spine. Corners rubbed; short tears to head of spine, at joints. Contemporary ownership signature on front endpaper and title page. Lower outer corner of page 21 lacking, resulting in the loss of a word or two. Scattered foxing; blank rear endpaper lacking. Faint old library stamp on front board.
