Dicey, Edward.

SIX MONTHS IN THE FEDERAL STATES.

Macmillan, London and Cambridge: 1863. First edition. Pushing as far south as Nashville and west asSt. Louis and Chicago, Dicey came to observe and report on the implications of the war and possible outcomes, making thoughtful comment on how events affected people and prospects for the future. Addressing his fellow Englishmen, he corrected some common misconceptions and encouraged support of the Union cause for economic, stategic, and moral reasons. Coulter's Travels in the Confederate States, 125: "a good observer, but his characteristic English dislike of slavery colored his observations. He spent most of his time in the North, making direct acquaintanceship with slave states through visits along the border...valuable for his comments on that part of the South which lay within the Federal lines." HOWES D314 8vo. Two volumes bound in one: x, 310; vi, 326pp. Ad leaf. Publisher's green cloth, gilt spine title. A very good, mostly unopened copy.
