Historical and Commercial Sketches of Washington and Environs: Our CapitalCity, "The Paris of America," Its Prominent Places and People, LeadingMerchants, Manufacturers, Artisans, and Professional Men; ItsImprovements, Progress, and Enterprise. Illustrated.

E.E. Barton, publisher, Washington, DC: 1884. First edition. Ownership marking "Ebbitt House 16th 85" on each pastedown; Ebbitt House (evolving into the present-day and Old Ebbitt Grill) has a long history, from the mid-19th century, as a leading Washington, D.C. hostelry, boarding house to congressmen and future Presidents and meeting place for informal political maneuvering. Compendium of biographical sketches for businessmen and their businesses, and for the others mentioned in the title. Rather widely held institutionally (OCLC locates 21 copies, including five in the District), but uncommon in trade; this is the first copy we have encountered. 8vo. xvi, 272 pp. Wood engraved plates, plan of the city; ads for local businesses. Original gilt-stamped plum cloth (dull), later manuscript paper spine label; old repairs to joints and hinges, but a good solid copy.
