(ENGLÄNDER, Richard) .
Bilderbögen des Kleinen Lebens, by Peter Altenberg.
Erich Reiss Verlag, Berlin: (c1909). First edition. 8vo. 221 pp. Inscribed by the author in 1910 asPeter Altenberg. Born Richard Engländer in an upper class Viennese Jewish family in 1859, Altenberg became well known as an eccentric in the turn of the 20th-century coffee house culture of his native city, best known in literary circles for brief writings in a variety of forms, poems, aphorisms, short stories, and musings; the Mann brothers, Robert Musil, and Arthur Schnitzler were among the admirers of his work. He began writing relatively late in life, at 37, but published 12 volumes in various forms before suffering a decline that resulted in his hospitalization for mental illness just after this book was issued, 1909- 1913. He died in 1919. Signed or inscribed copies of his works are decidedly scarce in trade. Original gold silk, title stamped in black on spine and upper board; lower spine chipped, head of spine a little frayed, corners bumped. Still a good copy of a very scarce book.
