The author (ca. 1660-1726), a French publicist, wrote several pamphlets in the late 17th century, published in Holland, "which were eagerly sought after, owing to the unceremonious manner in which he treated the ministry of France. … some useful compilations which he published made him favourably known in other countries. The emperor appointed him his historiographer" (Encyclopedia Britannica). 12mo. (34), 367; (10), 502 pp. Engraved frontispiece to each volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt between raised bands, gilt spine title, all edges sprinkled red; front board of volume one detached, else very good.
