1821 Title on spine: Porter's Travels. 2 vols., 720, 869 pp. monumental account of the English artist's (1777-1842) travels through the region, the work is of particular interest for the detailed written descriptions of numerous items of artistic and architectural merit, including temples, sculpture, ornamented tombs, ancient sites such as Persepolis, etc., Porter also delineates the customs and costumes of the native people he encountered and described the Shah and Crown Prince of Persia and their struggles with Russia, thereby presenting an unusually detailed picture of life in the region at the beginning of the 19th century, transcriptions of inscriptions, notes, appendix, index, text illustrations, 89 plates (circa 4 color, 20 fold-out). Inscribed by author, minor intermittent foxing in margins, top of one end paper missing. 4to. 3/4 leather and boards, raised spine. London (Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown) 1821-1822.
