[WARD, LYND]. Coatsworth, Elizabeth.

The Cat Who Went to Heaven. Together with original Lynd Ward painting.

NY Macmillan (1958) New edition. Large octavo. (viii), (64) pp. Presentation copy inscribed by LyndWard to Rockwell Kent bibliographer Dan Burne Jones. With eleven full-page illustrations by Ward, one of which is a double-page spread, and numerous text figures and vignettes printed in orange. For this edition Ward revisited Coatsworth's Newbery Award-winning story of a Japanese artist whose cat brings him good luck, which he originally illustrated in 1930. He created a series of stunning paintings on salmon-colored Japanese rice paper, one of which, depicting a tiger, accompanies this copy. Done in acrylic on rice paper, the painting is matted and measures 10 by 12 inches. It is unsigned and undated. The image appears on page 53 of the book, accompanying a passage about the Buddha taking the shape of a tiger. The combination of paper and medium give the tiger an element of dimensionality which is not carried through in the reproduction. Both book and painting are very fine.
