The Paternal Present: Being a Sequel to Pity's Gift.

Philadelphia Jacob Johnson 1807 12mo. 144 pp. Illustrated throughout with woodcut vignettes, most of which have been hand-colored. Includes a chapter entitled "The People of Colour", which is followed by five thematically related poems, each illustrated with a headpiece vignette. The tenor of the chapter and the subsequent verse is concerned with expanding what Pratt calls "the principal of sympathy" to differently complected people. It does not, however, overtly read like early abolitionist material. This title first saw print in London in 1802, with the first American edition appearing two years later. Original red leather backed marbled paper boards show rubbing and wear, rear endpaper lacking. Overall, a nice copy. (Welch 1045.2; Shaw 13427).
