ROY, CLAUDE.

La Famille Quatre Cents Coups.

(Paris 1954) Quarto. (24)ff., with (22)ff. of transparencies. Limited issue. Written, illustrated, and signed by the French poet Claude Roy. This surrealistic children's book is illustrated with collages in the spirit of Dada; with images of such oddities as a woman with a butterfly in place of her head, a massive bird of prey carrying off a child, and a train crashing into a sailing ship. The collages are overlaid with layers of red and transparent white printed tissue, which transform the images when the pages are turned. In pearlized, ivory wrappers embossed with a diamond pattern. Six photographic medallions decorate the wrappers, which are protected by a glassine jacket. Slight toning to page edges, else very fine in slipcover, which shows light wear.
