Melville, Herman.
Billy Budd Sailor. An Inside Narrative.
(Mount Holly, NJ) Married Mettle Press 1987 Octavo. (vi), 100, (2) pp. From an edition of 185 copies, this is one of 160 copies in the deluxe binding, signed by Benjamin Alterman, the typographer, and Deborah Alterman, the artist and engraver. The illustrations and ornaments are printed in brown, directly from the engraved woodblocks. The pale-green, speckled paper is handmade by the Altermans, who designed, printed, and bound the edition together, even hand-marbling the endsheets. Quarter bound in solid bronze, which is hinged at the joints and patinated to a malachite green as though salvaged from a long-submerged shipwreck. The signatures were sewn medieval-style to linen cords threaded through wooden boards. A handsome and unusual production which reflects the Altermans' sense that "the binding must preserve the book with physical armor." Mint, housed in box of glass and brass. (Binding).
