[SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE]. Rossetti, Dante Gabriel.
Ballads and Narrative Poems.
(Hammersmith Kelmscott Press 1893) One of 310 copies on paper. With woodcut title-page and facing full-page woodcut border. One of the earlier volumes printed by William Morris' legendary press, published eleven years after Rossetti's death. Set in Golden type in both black and red. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full blue crushed morocco, featuring a white three-masted sailing vessel and a seabird in white onlays on the front panel. This is framed by a broad brown morroco onlaid border, with gilt floral sprays and pointillé, and then encrusted with numerous precious and semi-precious stones. Below the vessel is a gilt "H" with a Plantagenet crown above. On the rear panel, the royal motif is continued with a crown formed of gilt and a dark crimson morocco onlay. The crown sits above a half Tudor rose, half thistle device, around which runs a ribbon containing lines from "The Kings Quair." As with the front panel, the rear features an onlaid brown morocco border, gilt, with eight precious stones, including rubies and an opal. Text from "The Blessed Damozel" dominates the doublures; each of the four stanzas here are written out in gilt, and are prefaced with an elaborate four-line initial capital that features delicate gilt-work and onlays. This binding was executed during Sangorski & Sutcliffe's most accomplished period of activity (c. 1907-1914), and is a stunning, complex achievement. Housed in a navy clamshell box with thin gilt-rule border front and back, gilt decorations to outer edges, and gilt lettering to spine. (Peterson A20).
