(1904-09) (12) ff. Folio. Includes 12 tipped-in "smokes" of Edward Johnston's instructional sheets,which include notes on his methods and the derivations of script styles. Light edgewear and a couple of faint scratches, else fine in quarter tan morocco and cloth. Together with a brilliant and dazzling original illuminated manuscript by Johnston entitled "The Embers of the Day Are Red". On the recto, eight lines of the text are prefaced by gold initials, in addition to the uncoventional placement of a large decorative initial "E" on the right side, which encloses a charming, handcolored domestic vignette. Seven additional large gold initials spell out "E-v-e-n-s-o-n-g", which are handcolored with a blue and green border. On the verso, latin text in black manuscript. Original manuscripts by Johnston are rare. Together with a facsimile of Johnston's vellum manuscript. for Shakespeare's The Song in Cymbeline, with the first 6-line capital "F" burnished in gold by Valenti Angelo, which is one of 175 copies.
