[MARTIN, KIRK]. Walker, Ardis M.

Sierra Nevada Sequence. A Series of Sonnets Illustrated with Original, Signed Wood Engravings by Kirk Martin.

(Kernville, CA) Sierra Trails Press (1968) Small quarto. (viii), (129) pp. First edition. Thirty-five loose signatures, unbound as issued. One of 107 numbered copies. Contains thirty-two sonnets, each accompanied by an original, tipped-in wood engraving, titled and signed by the illustrator. Housed in a cloth-backed chemise hand-bound by Bela Blau, the front cover of which is lightly soiled. Title page of sonnets also with minor soiling; remaining contents very fine. Laid-in are an inscribed Christmas card containing an additional sonnet by Walker, as well as a letter from Walker on his personal stationery to a Mr. Kenneth Luther, along with the stamped, addressed envelope. The illustrator, Kirk Martin, is a California artist who studied under Paul Landacre, and continued his mentor's tradition of cutting blocks depicting Western scenes, particularly of the mountains and desert, until his death in 1991. This is his major work, which required one year of full-time labor for the block cutting and printing alone.
