[EICHENBERG, FRITZ]. Erasmus, Desiderius.
In Praise of Folly [Encomium Moriæ].
NY & Baltimore Aquarius Press 1972 Folio. 22 ff + 10 plates. From an edition of 150 copies signed by Eichenberg, this is the artist's copy, stated on the colophon page. Illustrated with ten woodcuts, printed on handmade Japanese mulberry paper, and each plate is signed by the artist. Eichenberg has excerpted passages from Erasmus, which appear in the original Latin in the margin shoulder, printed in red. His translation of each passage is printed in larger type, in black. A large, evocative work, Eichenberg's illustrations draw their power not only from their size, but also in his use of contrast, all of which contribute to a stark, unflattering critique of human weakness. Small bump to top edge of red cloth portfolio, which has an inset gilt lettering piece on the front panel. A fine copy.
