The satires of Juvenalis and Persius, illustrated with numerous woodcuts including four fold-out plates, one of them depicting hand signs. Illustrations and translation by seventeenth century classicist and Oxford archdeacon Barten Holyday. Title-page in red and black. In contemporary calf binding with blind-stamped floral ornamentation at corners of blind panel on front and back covers. Spine with five raised bands and title in gilt. Gilt dentelles along extremities of both covers. As may be expected, covers show some blemishes, and spine is worn at extremities. Slight toning interior, one leaf with a small tear at top, several pages bound out of order. Owner signature written unobtrusively on title page. A nice copy of a handsome volume. Bookplate.
