[LEVITZKY, G.G.].

The Love Books of Ovid.

London John Lane, Bodley Head 1925 Octavo. 216 pp. One of 3000 copies. With numerous color and black and white engravings by Jean de Bosscèhre. Ovid's three-part treatise on erotic love, translated from the Latin by J. Lewis May and beautifully bound in painted vellum by Parisian binder G.G. Levitzky. The front cover illustration depicts a seduction scene with Cupid hovering above. The illustration is set within an elaborate border of rods and garlands, the top corners of which are illustrated with depictions of goats' heads. The book's fine craftsmanship is also apparent in endleaves that are decorated with a paste-paper design. T.e.g. Interior pages show scattered foxing throughout, primarily around edges, and two pages have small tears to the outer margin. Includes slipcase covered in marbled paper. Book and slipcase about fine.
