HARTE, BRETT.

The Heathen Chinee.

(San Francisco) Book Club of California 1934 Folio. Frenchfold. 41 pp. + prospectus and bibliography. One of 200 copies produced for the Book Club of California and printed on American vellum. Harte's poem, a parody of Swinburne's "Atalanta," is wonderfully illustrated with full-page line drawings by Phil Little. Also with an introduction by Ina Coolbrith as well as a bibliography, subsequent to the text, with notes on some of the earliest printed versions of the poem. Very fine in stiff blue boards, stab-sewn and with a cover label bearing the title in faux Chinese script. Housed in a folding canvas chemise with clasps and a cover label that repeats type treatment from book label. The book is accompanied by two additional volumes: a prospectus containing a sample leaf and a separate presentation of the bibliography, both in red wrappers with cover labels. Cover for bibliography has a small tear at the edge, and the label on the prospectus is somewhat browned at one edge, else both are fine. The book itself bears a previous owner's inscription on the first free endleaf, else fine.
