Quantin 1883 Small quarto. iv, 138 pp. An examination of the use of umbrellas throughout history, with numerous black and white, monochrome, and color illustrations by Paul Avril, almost all of which include extra illustrations that show them in a second state, hors texte. The exquisite head- and tail-pieces, both depicting small children holding umberellas, are rendered on silk. The book is beautifully bound in full navy morocco with gilt-tooled borders to the covers and decorative gilt umbrellas to the spine within compartments; gilt-decorated doublures of full red morocco offer an effectively striking contrast to the dark exterior. The spine shows slight fading, and there is minor wear to the top hinge as well as some toning to endpapers, else a fine copy of a beautifully illustrated and bound book. A.e.g. Bookplate.
