Paris Antoine de Sommaville 1655 Large octavo. (xvi), 740, 401 pp. First French illustrated edition. The fifteen books of the Metamorphoses, followed by explanatory text on each of the myths. Translated from the Latin by the popular French dramatist Pierre du Ryer and illustrated by Jaspar Isaac, whose meticulously executed, full-page wood engravings precede the preface as well as books two through fifteen, with smaller engravings used as title-page headpieces and initials. The full-page illustrations wonderfully render scenes from each myth within a given book, such as Zeus striking down Phaethon with thunderbolts, Athena turning Arachne into a spider, and Bacchus presenting Ariadne with the jeweled crown, among others. The book is bound in rich full calf, dark brown, with five raised bands as well as gilt title and decorations to the spine. Binding shows some edgewear, a small crack to the top hinge, and minor scarring. Interior with scattered foxing, a few stray marks, and offsetting from illustrations. A distinguished volume of a canonical work of Western literature. (Graesse v.5, p. 89).
