Boston Abel Bowen 1828 Two small quarto volumes. (viii), 400 pp. Second edition. Extra-illustrated with 176 plates consisting of portraits, maps, and scenes. Title-page and Preface of the first edition from 1825 bound in to volume I. "The fathers of Boston entered upon the stage of life while Elizabeth enjoyed the throne, and they learnt in the nursery, the tale of former persecution and of deaths for conscience sake," reads the opening line of this chronological history of the city. Bound in full tan calf by Bayntun, with simple but elegant decorations to boards in gilt and blind tooling, more elaborate gilt decorations to spines as well as gilt dentelles of a floral pattern. Brown and red leather title labels to spine, lettered in gilt. Endpapers marbled. Professional-quality restoration to repair tears to original title-page and Preface, with no loss of text. Minor soiling to some interior pages in volume I, a few small scratches to boards and one spine label, as well as very minor rubbing or chipping at extremities. A fine set overall.
