London Black, Parry, and Kingsbury; John Walker and Sherwood, Neely, and Jones 1812 Octavo. xl, 595pp. Collyer's lectures, dedicated to "Field-Marshal His Royal Highness Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathern..." With a fine fore-edge painting of a harbor scene in which several ships are under sail, including one flying a French flag. An ink notation on the verso of the front endpaper suggests a New York scene. This, coupled with the date of publication, raises the possibility that the edge depicts a scene from the War of 1812, as several significant naval battles were fought in New York harbors. In a full red morocco binding with gilt floral borders to both boards in triplicate, the middle border done in a floral motif and with repeating corner ornaments. Spine elaborately gilt-decorated in four compartments. Corners lightly bumped, scattered foxing throughout, else fine. A.e.g. (Fore-edge Painting).
