[KOCH, RUDOLF]. de Lagarde, Paul.

Das Verborgene Deutschland.

Offenbach a.M. Klingspor 1920 Small quarto. (5) ff. With hand-drawn and hand-colored initial and decorations by Rudolf Koch, the famed type designer and calligrapher at the Klingspor type foundry in Germany. This copy apparently was a proof copy, as it contains handwritten notes on changes to be made to the opening initial as well as the terminal paragraph decoration on the facing page. The author, Paul de Lagarde, was a renowned nineteenth century Bible scholar and orientalist as well as a virulent anti-semite and nationalist whose writings are thought to have influenced Hitler. Koch, for his part, had strong ties to Offenbach's Jewish community, and at one time produced a complete Haggadah. That the two men's work should be paired in this volume, then, is something of an historical curiosity. Slight bumping to spine at head and foot, else fine in pictorial boards.
