book detail

[STEIG, WILLIAM].

Five original drawings.

c. 1958 Pen and ink on paper of varying sizes and finishes. All are signed by Steig. These drawingswere produced for an advertising campaign for the Butcher Polish Company of Marlborough, Massachusetts, which saw itself leading its market during this period. Steig's drawings feature various faces wearing a panorama of expressions, from despair to hope. Steig, best known for his illustrated children's books and New Yorker cartoons, evidently did not hold the advertising industry in high regard: according to one account in a 1987 Publisher's Weekly article, Steig told one firm with which he was dealing that they "were a bunch of idiots." Several drawings have minor corrections, two have become dismounted. All are fine.
