[ATLAN, J(EAN) M(ICHEL).]. Kafka, Franz.

Description D'un Combat.

(Paris Maeght 1946) Quarto. (81)pp. One of 350 numbered copies. An early work of the artist, illustrated with nine full-page black-and-white lithographs by J.M. Atlan and several smaller head and tailpieces. Atlan studied and taught philosophy at the Sorbonne, but then taught himself to paint after losing his teaching license and falling into poverty during the occupation of Paris during World War II. He was arrested in 1942 for participating in the Resistance, and feigned mental illness in order to evade imprisonment. As a result, he spent time in a sanatorium, where he was exposed to alternate perceptions of reality that deeply affected his work. With an introduction by Clara Malraux and Rainer Dorland and a preface by Bernard Groethuysen. Loose, as issued, in portfolio within illustrated, printed wrappers with tri-fold flaps. Fine in a tan chemise and matching slipcase with a label on the front panel. With the bookplate of noted retailer and book collector Stanley Marcus.
