A scholarly work on cartography illustrated with 65 photo reproductions of Gulf Coast maps dating primarily to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as a full-page color frontispiece "Mapa de Tierra Firma, Yslas Barlobento," from 1700. Winner of the La Bahía Award for outstanding research on the colonial period of Texas history, the book offers an analysis of the way in which Spanish manuscript maps influenced the maps of Spain's colonial rivals including England, France, and the Netherlands. Printed at the Wind River Press in Austin, with red initials and the title page in red and black. Bound in quarter maroon cloth and illustrated-paper boards, with a lable to the spine. Mint in a parchment paper wrapper with the title printed in white on the front panel. Prospectus laid in.
