[BRADLEY, WILL].

Will Bradley's Art Service for Advertisers.

NY Will Bradley (c. 1912) Octavo. (21) ff. With numerous color illustrations by the legendary artist, printer, designer, and typographer. Best remembered in the book world as the proprietor of the Wayside Press in Springfield, Mass., Bradley was also a renowned graphic artist whose turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau posters were regarded in the same class as those of the best French and English illustrators of the period. His work was often compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, an early influence. In addition to his printing and fine art pursuits, Bradley was a commercial artist, and around 1912 issued this catalogue of advertising art, complete with a fold-out price list tipped-in to the inside of the back wrapper. Although intended for retail merchants to use in advertising stationery, hats, gowns, cut glass, and such, the color artwork nevertheless displays Bradley's distinct art nouveau style, one that would be superseded a short time later by art deco design. Of note is an illustration on the inside front cover depicting three African American minstrel-show caricatures. The style of this illustration is distinctly cartoonish and unlike the others in the catalogue. Printed on Alexandra Japan paper and bound in tan wrappers, which are illustrated in orange and lettered in green. The back cover has separated but is present. Some chipping to page edges, very minor soiling or foxing to two back pages and the price list, which is worn through in a couple spots at the fold line. An intriguing item from one of the major figures in the twentieth century book design.
