Illustrations depict Commodore Matthew Perry's 1853 voyage to Japan to open that country's ports to American ships. A distinguished U.S. Naval officer, Perry sailed to Japan at the bequest of President Millard Fillmore, who viewed Japan as a potentially valuable trade partner. After several weeks a treaty was struck. Two Japanese ports, Shimoda and Hakodate, were officially opened to American vessels. Perry reported being impressed during negotiations by the hospitality of the Japanese, who to this day hold celebrations commemorating the historic treaty between the two countries. The book is bound in mauve, natural fiber wrappers. The binding is stab sewn in the traditional Japanese manner, and the corners at the spine head and foot are capped by a slip of green silk.
