BROWNE, SIR THOMAS.
Urne Buriall and the Garden of Cyrus.
London Cassell 1932 Quarto. xx, 146 pp. One of 215 copies. Illustrated with thirty collotypes from chalk and crayon drawings by Paul Nash, colored by the pochoir process. Printed by Oliver Simon at the Curwen Press, where Harold Curwen supervised the stencilling of the illustrations. Widely regarded as a crowning achievement in modern British art, Nash's treatment of Browne's seventeenth century treatise on burial vessels is described as being typical of his paintings of the period. The topic of this text, though, could not have found a more fitting illustrator, for while Nash is recognized as one of England's finest contemporary landscape artists, he maintained a lifelong thematic interest in mortality. The combination of an early awareness of physical fragility, the death of his mother at a young age, and especially his involvement in the First World War brought an unusual lyricism to Nash's depictions of scenes involving death and dying. The first eighty-five copies of this book were bound by Nevetts after a design by Nash, and these tend to exhibit problems with warping. This copy features the later binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe after the original design of vellum boards, with a morocco panel showing a quincunx design in vellum onlays and gilt. The design, a cubist version of an urn burial, is repeated on the back in morocco onlays and gilt on vellum. A.e.g. Some lifting to the vellum around the border with the morocco onlay on the front panel, else fine. Housed in the original brown buckram slipcase, which shows some spotting primarily on the spine and lower edge. (From Manet to Hockney 94).
