RETTIG, H.C.M. (EDITOR).

Antiquissimus Quatuor Evangeliorum Canonicorcum Codex Sangallensis.

Turici Schulthess 1836 Small quarto. vi, liv, 429 pp. A facsimilie of the Saint Gall Codex, a ninthcentury Greek manuscript of the Gospels that was possibly written by Walafrid Strabo, a Frankish monk and author. The original manuscript is kept in the famed library of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Gall in present-day Switzerland. The text has an interlinear Latin gloss of the "old Latin" version. Considered to be one of the earliest lithographic reproductions of an early manuscript. Bound in mottled blue boards with leather backing and corner pieces. Title in gilt to the spine, endpapers marbled. Scattered foxing throughout, minor creasing to some leaves, lower corner of last three leaves with small tear. A near fine copy. T.e.g. Bookplate of collector Otto Orren Fisher.
