Buchbeschreibung

THE LORSCH GOSPELS.

(New York George Braziller 1967) Folio. (476) ff, 23 pp. One of 1000 numbered copies. A facsimilie of the manuscript of the Lorsch Gospels, so called because they were originally housed at the library of the Abbey of Lorsch, near Worms. Manuscript facsimilie in black and white, with 54 color plates showing ornamental pages, miniatures, and Canon Tables. According to the Introduction for this edition, the manuscript "originated in the Scriptorium at the Court of Aachen, about 810, presumably at the commission of Charlemagne." Elegantly bound in full red cloth with vellum backing, lettered in gilt. Introduction by Wolfgang Braunfels bound separately, in plain gray wrappers. Introduction contains two full-page color plates and several smaller in black and white. Book and Introduction housed together in a slipcase covered in gray pastepaper. Very fine, with just a little wear to the bottom joint of the slipcase.
