DE BLEGNY, ETIENNE.

Les Elemens ou Premieres Instructions de la Jeunesse.

Paris Jean de Nully 1732 Small octavo. (xii), 20, 323 (5) pp. + 40 plates. A book of handwriting instruction in French and Italian, by a writing master who describes himself on the title-page as a "sworn expert in the verification of contested handwriting." The first part of the book is the writing manual, and the second part takes up grammar, vocabulary, orthography, and even arithmetic. The book's chief interest is its forty fine examples of delicate calligraphy, which are interspersed with stylized illustrations of animals and celestial bodies. Bound in full brown calf, which is dry and chipped, particularly at the spine. Thumb-size area on rear cover worn down to the board, hinges still holding but with leather worn off. Minor dampstaining to top margin of first few leaves, else interior well preserved. A good copy of a well-regarded handwriting manual.
