Velikovsky was a psychoanalyst and the author of the 1950 bestseller Worlds in Collision, in which he argued that, as a result of interplanetary collisions in pre-historic and historic times, the earth suffered natural catastrophes that largely determined its fate. He also argued for a reformation of the traditional chronology of the near east in order to reconcile it with events in Biblical history. The scientific community mostly rebuffed or ignored him, while others considered his theories sage. Pensee "reconsiders" Velnikovsky with articles and essays such as "Babylonian Observations of Venus," "Oedipus and Akhnaton," and "A Quantitative Test for Catastrophic Theories."
