Lullabies and Night Songs.

New York Harper & Row (1965) Quarto. (78) pp. First edition. A mixture of traditional folk songs, original compositions, and old lyrics set to new music. This is one of the most lavishly illustrated of all Sendak's books, with color pictures on every page. With an inscription by Sendak dated 1976, along with an original ink drawing by him on the half-title, which shows the ram, who appears in the illustrations for one of the lullabies as well as on the front cover. In the drawing he is holding a sheet of paper on which is written "With pleasure!" Bound in full blue cloth, gilt lettered on the cover and spine, and pictorial dust wrapper. Gilt on binding slightly rubbed. Dust wrapper in fair condition only, with two large closed tears to front panel with slight loss of paper, some loss to spine ends from adhesive removal, spine evenly toned. Contemporary owner's inscription to front endleaf and verses from Tennyson and Brahms written in a neat hand on the two rear blanks. A nice copy overall, with original artwork by one of the most beloved children's book artists of the twentieth century. (Hanrahan A63).
