Aula Veneris. Sive Varietas Foeminini Sexus diversarum Europæ Nationum (The Court of Venus; or, Varieties of the Female Sex of the Different Nations in Europe).

N.p. 1830 Octavo. 41 ff. Illustrated with thirty-six mounted pen-and-ink drawings after etchings byWenceslaus Hollar from the original 1644 publication. Most of these drawings have been heightened with watercolors. These renderings of Hollar's etchings are quite accomplished and compare favorably in a side-by-side comparison. A fuller appreciation of the skill that went into this exercise can be gained by looking at the facsimile of the original title-page, in which even the lettering has been faithfully reproduced. There is no indication as to the identity of the artist: several of the drawings bear the initials PC and the date 1830; there is, in addition, an ownership inscription of Elizabeth Cobbett on the front endpaper. Represented here is a cross-section of Hollar's original scope, a few of which are shown in several states of the original. In addition to the representations of women from various social strata, there is in this album one of Hollar's most unusual treatments: Mulier ex Virginia, or Virginian woman. This image shows a tattooed woman dressed in native attire. Bound in likely original straight-grained purple morocco with simple double-ruled gilt border to both panels.
