London Messrs. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green 1824 8vo measuring 5 5/8 by 8 7/10 inches.Two volumes. xii, 610, (10); iv, 663, (17) pages. First edition. Issued in four sizes from 32mo to royal 8vo. This is one of the royal 8vo "Roxburghe copies" containing the additional title pages engraved with scenes from printing history. According to Bigmore & Wyman, the book "abounds with information of a very useful character, spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour, and freshness of the author." The first volume outlines the history of printing, including biographical sketches of English printers through the sixteenth century. The second volume describes the more "practical" matters of printing, such as "description[s] of types, directions for composing, for press, and warehouse work, &c." The text is interspursed with shorts poems and small illustrations for added interest. Ex-library copy with two stamps in each volume, one on the title page and the other on the front free endpaper. Boards detached and not present. Lacking spine covering, though the text blocks remain intact and tight. Grayish transfer on engraved portrait and title page of second volume.
