A detailed analysis of the making of the Winchester Bibles, two of the great twelfth century English illuminated Bibles. "[M]ost considerable works of art benefit from a serious attempt to see more deeply into what the artist was trying to do, and how he set about it," states the author in his Introduction. The book is copiously illustrated with large black and white photo reproductions, offering a close and detailed look at the original Bibles, as well as eleven color plates displaying some of these works' most striking illumination. Beautifully printed on heavy cream-colored paper and bound in full red cloth with gilt decoration to the cover and gilt lettering to the spine. Covered in a parchment paper wrapper, which is torn at the spine head, else a mint copy in a cloth slipcase. T.e.g.
