KALEIDOSCOPE.
Providence, RI C.G. Bush & Co. 1874 An early kaleidoscope in perfect working order, made by Bush and Co., whose founder Charles Bush popularized the device as a toy in America, though originally it had been developed for scientific purposes. Resembling a telescope more than do modern versions, the device consists of a 9 1/4-inch black barrell, about 3 inches in diameter, with a small eye piece at one end and a spoked wheel at the other. The wheel houses a plastic drum containing colored ampules that tumble into various kaleidoscopic patterns as the viewer turns the wheel. A metal rod attached to the underside of the kaleidoscope extends another several inches beyond the lens, functioning as a candle holder. When lit, the candle acts as the kaleidoscope's light source. In 1874 the candle would have been necessary for indoor use of the device, and today serves as a charming reminder of a time before the invention of electric light. The kaleidoscope is mounted on a turned wood stand. The legs of the stand can be disassembled for easy packing and shipment, an invention which itself was patented by Bush in November 1874; the statement of patent is stamped directly into the wood. According to the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society, it is "quite rare" to find a Bush kaleidoscope in good condition, "and if one does surface it is more likely to be the single pedestal than the four-pronged model" such as this one. Both the kaleidoscope and stand are in fine condition save for a few small nicks to the barrel of the kaleidoscope. A delightful and rare nineteenth century children's toy, remarkably well preserved.
