Manuel Historique et Bibliographique de L'Amateur de Reliures.

Paris Gruel & Engelmann; Léon Gruel and Henri LeClerc 1887, 1905 Two quarto volumes. 186 pp., + (68) ff.; 186 pp. + (70) ff. Volume I is one of 250 copies, volume II one of 600 copies. Illustrated with a total of 138 reproductions of bindings and related materials in black and white, monochrome, and a number of stunning color plates apparently printed by intaglio. Also with one tipped-in leaf and numerous text vignettes. A history of the subject by the well-known French binder and scholar Gruel, with biographical notes on numerous binders and examples of bindings dating from the eleventh through the eighteenth century. In contemporary quarter blue morocco and marbled boards, with the original color-decorated wrappers bound in. T.e.g. Books are not uniform in size, volume I being slightly larger than volume II. Hinges of both volumes worn and split at spine ends, small amount of chipping and rubbing to spines, some offsetting interior. Plates in fine condition.
