KIYOMITSU, TORII.

Kumadori Toriha Tehon (Kabuki makeup. The Model of Tori Family).

N.p. N.d Small oblong quarto. 50ff. Manuscript featuring expressive illustrations of the makeup, characters, and costumes of the Kabuki actor Itikawa Danjuro VIII, eighteen of which are colored with red, blue, green, and brown in order to show the actor's Kumadori-style makeup. The album includes images of the actor in almost every conceivable role, playing both male and female characters, since women were banned from performing Kabuki theater beginning in the early seventeenth century, supernatural beings, and human characters young and old. The illustrations are done in the style of the Torii school of painting, named after the Torii family, which was the main producer of Kabuki theater signboards and promotional items. Stab-bound in orange paper wrappers with a faint textile pattern on the front cover. Wrappers show some wear and light soiling to edges; internally very fine. Housed in a folding chemise of brown cloth-covered boards, secured with two bone clasps. (Kabuki Theater).
