[KENT, ROCKWELL].

Glory, Glory Hallelujah.

N.p. 1944 One of 150 signed proofs, after which the image was canceled and the plate destroyed. Inscribed to Kent's daughter and son-in-law from Sally and Rockwell. Burne-Jones mentions that these prints were intended to be Christmas gifts for Kent's friends and family. This lithograph on zinc of a winged warrior, perhaps Victory, holding an upraised sword and flag, is a fine example of the Art Deco-style illustration that earned Rockwell Kent his fame. Kent was also known for his extensive travels and political activism, both of which the U.S. government attempted to restrict under allegations of Communism. According to Karl Zigrosser's introduction to the catalogue raisonné of Kent's prints, this print was one of a few lithographs that Kent created ”to celebrate his protests against these violations of his personal liberty. And yet these prints somehow also reflect a personal satisfaction and happiness in being able to return to his work when these trials and tribulations were over and done with. From all that he experienced, he drew the most striking imagery of which he was capable and portrayed it with a determined forthrightness, and with great strength and beauty." This triumphant image accompanies the text of the first verse of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Framed and matted. Extremely fine. (20 1/2 by 16; 51x41cm). (Burne-Jones p. xxviii, 137)
