MUNARI, BRUNO.

Nella Notte Buia.

Milan Muggiani (1956) (29)ff. First edition, with Italian text. This famous children's book was born out of Munari's concept of the "illegible book." Its illustrations in bold, solid colors are emphasized, and are accompanied by minimal text in Italian. The tale is not only told with captivating images, but also through the shapes and materials of the pages themselves. Using overlapping cutouts and transparent cellophane overlays, the reader follows a cat on its nocturnal adventures, investigates the insect life within a lawn, and finds a treasure chest within a cave, which opens. On the rear pastedown are two folded squares in bold blue and yellow that contain the colophon and a humorous biography of the author. One of the founders of the Concrete Art movement and part of the second wave of Futurist artists, Munari originally began creating children's books for his son, Alberto, in the 1940s. Faintest rubbing to a few corner tips of the fragile black printed boards, else a very fine copy of an inventive publication.
