[MASEREEL, FRANS]. Verhaeren, Émile.

Cinq Récits.

(Geneva) Éditions Du Sablier 1920 Small quarto. (101)pp., + 26ff. plates. From an edition of 500, this is one of fourteen copies signed by the illustrator, Frans Masereel, with two original, signed drawings. This collection of five stories by the prolific Belgian poet Émile Verhaeren is extensively illustrated with bold, expressive woodcuts by Masereel. Around the same time that this collection was published, Masereel also began to create several so-called "image novels" that used illustrations rather than text to tell a story. In this spirit, the illustrations in each of the five tales included in this collection are strong enough that they alone could almost tell the stories. With the bookplate of curator Jan van der Marck, who was the founding director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Extremely fine in white paper wrappers covered with glassine. Housed in a black clamshell box.
