Buchbeschreibung

BUCKLAND WRIGHT, JOHN.

Cupid's Pastime.

Maastricht Stols 1935 Octavo. (5)ff. One of six 'Hors Serie' copies, and formerly the artist's own copy. Illustrated with a frontispiece and four full-page plates from copper engravings, all of which are pencil-signed by Buckland Wright in this copy. Additionally, there are two rejected designs for the frontispiece laid in, also signed and titled. This copy has a lengthy inscription by Buckland Wright which explains, among other things, that there were six such copies "made as gifts for friends & collaborators," for a total edition of thirty-seven copies. The inscription also touches upon Buckland Wright's motive for producing this work, which is of technical interest: "This was an attempt to produce something as perfect as possible and in common with books of the 17th century to avoid blanks by printing plates on the back of letterpress and even other plates." There is also an A.L.s laid in, addressed to the recipient of this copy. In original white buckram-backed patterned boards and printed dust wrapper. Housed in a folding case. A very fine copy. T.e.g. (Reid A19).
