BUCKLAND WRIGHT, JOHN.
(Signed Letters, Block, and Print).
(c. 1933-1934) 23 items. A unique archive of materials related to the artist and illustrator John Buckland Wright. This collection consists of 14 typed letters, signed, one signed autograph letter, an original engraved wooden block for printing, and an inscribed print from a wood engraving. The recipient of the letters was Edmond Travis, and the correspondence concerns the mounting of an exhibition of Buckland Wright's work at the Webb C. Ball Galleries in Ohio. The letters are dated between May 10, 1933 and January 9, 1934. Buckland Wright strikes a commercial tone at the outset of this correspondence: "I have heard from my friend Mrs. Ruth Clark that you are an admirer of my work and that you say you think you can sell anything of mine that is for sale." Although he maintains a steady business-like demeanor throughout, Buckland Wright offers many glimpses into his artistic persona, asking Travis at one point "whether you prefer my later work or not," and he notes that "a lot of people stick at my 1927 stuff and others cant [sic] get much further than Keats." On the 15th of September, he lays out an eight-point summary of his approach to commission work, and he instructs Travis on the best way to print the block he created for the exhibition -- the block that is included here. The archive also contains four copies of the printed invitation, which satisfied the artist's one condition for its printing: "It must be printed on some form of vellum, that is a paper with a smooth even surface." In addition, two clippings of articles announcing the upcoming exhibit are also included. This is a wealth of insight into the commercial and creative life of one of the great English illustrators.
