SUMMERS, SUSAN.
A Crown of Flowers Alphabet.
Shropshire, UK Tern Press 1997 Square 16mo. (28)pp. One of 150 copies. A botanically-themed alphabet book with verses in celebration of the nativity. The opening initials on each page are delicately illuminated with different flowers. In most instances, the flower's name is linked to the letter; however, sometimes the connection is more indirect or symbolic. For example, the Black Thorn is used to illustrate the letter x, since the accompanying text foreshadows Christ's crucifixion. Each illustration was hand-watercolored by Mary Parry in subtle, natural tones. A key is provided that describes the flowers used in each illustration. Extremely fine in a decorative cloth binding, which is printed with a wood grain pattern, calligraphic letters, and elaborate initials.
